Artist Statement

It’s my belief that art should be everywhere, not just in museums and galleries, but accessible to everyone. I think that art should have purpose. Even if that purpose is only to put a smile ones face, that’s still a valid reason for it’s existence. This idea of purpose has been my inspiration to create studio furniture. This is the name given to one of a kind sculptural furniture, and is said to teeter on the line between fine art and commercial design. I personally don’t like to take the safe rout anyway, and have enjoyed the challenge of making pieces that subdue the very question of it being art or not. My studio furniture tends to push the rules and ones assumptions about how something should be made, and it’s purpose. Thus further separating it from the formulaic furnishing we see everyday. I try to imbed obvious and subtle layers of symbolism in work. I feel having that depth in a piece lets people read into it as far as they want. In a way I like to have a piece say up front what it is about, and if someone is interested they can dig as deep as they want. I believe that is the direction my work is heading. My ideas have gained a great deal of depth to them, and I spend I lot more time developing my concepts. I just hope I can compel a few people to really peal back the layers and see what is really there.
